The world’s largest mangrove forest on the deltas of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghan rivers in the Bay of Bengal is the world’s largest island called Sundarban. In 1887, it was announced by UNICO as a World Heritage Site. Also, the Sundarban National Park was declared as a Biosphere Reserve in 1989. 

• Sundarban National Park is the largest Delta in the world, it consists of the Mangrove forest spread across India and Bangladesh, this forest is spread over 10,000 km. 

• The Indian part of the forest within Indian territory is called Sundarban National Park which is located in the southern part of West Bengal.

• The forest has a large number of beautiful trees and it is said that the forest got its name from these trees. The delta is the largest reservoir for Bengal whales. 

• The Sundarban cover an area of 38,500 sq. km, of which about one-third is covered by water/marsh.
